In a crumble?
Yes, yes & yes.
Berries are naturally sweet and juicy, low in sugar and high in nutrients.
This recipe in from one of Lorraine Pascal’s recipe books, we found it while looking for a healthy version of a berry crumble. A good crumble is amazing but all the flour and sugar can put you off if you’re trying to be good…
For this recipe we will swap the bad and processed food for healthier ingredients: oats instead of flour, dates instead of sugar and almonds for that crunch that you would get from all the butter. Plus, cinnamon and ginger for extra flavor and punch.
It’s so easy and quick to make you will be surprised. It will make you feel all warm and cozy inside, not to mention that it will make your house smell amazing!
Basics: Oats, berries, dates, almond, coconut oil, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and vanilla pod.

For the crumble
- 180g porridge oats
- 80g ground almonds
- 7 Medjool dates, pitted and very finely chopped
- 4 tbsp of coconut oil (Original recipe uses 4 tbsp butter)
- 3 tsp ground ginger
- 0.5 vanilla pod, seeds only
For the filling
- 600g fresh berries
- 2 Medjool dates, pitted and very finely chopped
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 0.5 tsp ground nutmeg
- Preheat the oven to 190°C.
- Put the filling ingredients (berries, 2 Medjool dates, cinnamon and nutmeg) into a pan over a low heat and cook for about 4 minutes or until the fruit just begins to soften. Tip the fruit into an ovenproof dish and set this aside.
- Put the porridge oats, ground almonds, dates, coconut oil (or butter), 2 teaspoons of the ground ginger and the vanilla seeds into a bowl and, using your fingertips, rub this gently together to just combine so everything is evenly mixed in.
- Tip the crumble topping over the fruit and then sprinkle over the remaining 1 teaspoon of ground ginger (Although it will provide extra flavor, if you don’t like things spicy just skip this step).
- Pop into the oven and cook for about 25 minutes or until the crumble is just going golden brown.
- Once cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool for a few minutes before serving.
You can serve it with ice cream if you are feeling extra cheeky (aka naughty).
